Printable Bass Pentatonic Scale Shapes Chart PDF

Dear fellow musician,

This 4-string bass pentatonic scale shapes chart pdf is an essential tool for players who want to start learning the minor and major pentatonic scales for bass.

What you’ll find here is a guided chart that includes all five pentatonic shapes (also called patterns or fingerings), both for the major and the minor pentatonic scales.

How is it guided?

In the downloadable-print-ready free  PDF file, I’ve organized the roots of the pentatonic scale positions ( same as pentatonic boxes) in different colors so you can identify the minor or major pentatonic root note  (Glossary link) in each position, depending on what mood you’re after.

In other words, one position can be major or minor, depending on your reference point or how you’re looking at the specific pentatonic pattern.

Of course, it’s possible because of the relative minor and major keys principal.
In the following worksheet, all five positions are on the A minor or C major pentatonic scale, and of course, you can move them anywhere you want to get different keys by moving the root.

This printable bass pentatonic scale shapes PDF will also benefit music teachers who need a simple pentatonic forms chart to visually represent the scale on the fingerboard during their lessons.

Another benefit of the printable bass pentatonic scale shapes chart is that you can download it once and print it repeatedly.

Recommended Printing Settings:

For US Letter Paper (8.5 x 11 inches):

  • Scale: 100%
  • Paper Size: US Letter (8.5 x 11)
  • Layout: Portrait

For A4 Paper (use outside the US and Canada 8.27 x 11.69 inches):

  • Scale: 100% (or “Scale to Fit” for perfect alignment)
  • Paper Size: A4
  • Layout: Portrait

Here’s how I marked the root notes in each pentatonic scale diagram or “box”:

The circled red mark represents the root of the minor pentatonic scale.

The blue triangle mark represents the major pentatonic scale’s root note at the same position.

(Yes, that’s right. It is one position that’ll give you two different pentatonic atmospheres).

The numbers within the circles or triangles represent the fingers you’re supposed to press with (the “correct” fingering).

Important: the suggested fingerings are for basic memorization only.

Eventually, exploring and deciding what fingering works best under your fingers is up to you so your playing flows comfortably and smoothly.
